The building blocks of complex text are facility with words and their meanings and background knowledge. The way to ensure both word knowledge and world knowledge is to increase the amount of well-designed vocabulary instruction in classrooms as well as the amount that students read. This workshop will cover the four components of a vocabulary curriculum that increases word and world knowledge and also ways to increase responsibility for reading texts. Educators will also be provided with guidance on where to locate open-access materials to support vocabulary learning and to increase reading volume.
