Reading Partners has developed comprehension guides to accompany texts that they use in their tutoring sessions. Some of the texts they use includes TextProject’s SummerReads and FYI for Kids. Reading Partners has given TextProject permission to share the guides with classroom teachers.
Each guides includes directions that introduces the skill and an example for students and teachers to practice the skill. Use the guides as an introduction to learn a particular comprehension skill, or as a means to guide discussion about a text.
Guides:
- Explaining Scientific Concepts
- Main Topic in Informational Texts
- Making Inferences (Informational Text)
- Explaining Information
- Cause and Effect (Historical Events)
- Cause and Effect
These worksheets are samples from the Reading Partners‘ one-on-one tutoring curriculum and may be reproduced for single classroom use only. Each lesson in the Reading Partners curriculum includes several student text choices; select lessons for grades 2-4 use TextProject texts. Please contact Jenny Kellard, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, with any questions about these materials.
Reading Partners is a national literacy nonprofit that helps empower struggling readers across the country with the reading skills they need to reach their full potential. The organization recruits and trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to K-5 students from low-income communities in California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina, New York, Washington, DC, and Maryland. During the 2013-14 school year, Reading Partners will serve at least 7,000 students from 137 schools across the country, with the support of approximately 8,000 community volunteers. With a structured, research-driven curriculum, the program has a strong track record of success: the average Reading Partners student more than doubles their rate of learning in reading to close the achievement gap found in low-income communities.
